Customer Groups

Go to: CRM → Setup → Customer Groups

A customer group classifies who you sell to — Commercial, Individual, Government, Distributor, Export. Groups are arranged as a tree, and each can carry default commercial terms.

They are used on the Prospect record, to classify a target company before it becomes a customer, and on the Customer master for pricing defaults and reporting.

Structure

A default tree — All Customer Groups with Commercial, Individual, and Government — is created the first time the module is used.

Creating a customer group

Open the screen

Go to CRM → Setup → Customer Groups and click New.

Name it

Customer Group Name is required and must be unique.

Place it in the tree

Choose a Parent Customer Group, or leave it empty for a root-level group.

Set the defaults

Fill Default Payment Terms and Default Price List if this group sells on standard commercial terms.

Save

Editing, moving, and deleting

The same tree rules apply as for territories: no self-parenting, no moving under a descendant, Is Group cannot be switched off while children exist, and a group with children cannot be deleted.

Editing a customer group and leaving Parent Customer Group empty moves it to the top of the tree. If you only meant to change the description, check the parent is still selected before saving.

Everyday tips

  1. Group by how you sell, not by industry — industry is already a separate field on leads and prospects.
  2. Set defaults on the leaf groups, where the commercial terms are actually decided.
  3. Keep the list short enough that a seller can pick the right one without thinking.
  • Prospects — where customer group is set before conversion
  • Customers — the master that inherits the group’s defaults
